Griffiths Sheppard Consulting began as an informal collaboration between Kevin Sheppard and Jeff Griffiths, two Certified Management Consultants from Alberta. After working together on a number of projects beginning in 2002, they formally incorporated Griffiths Sheppard Consulting Group, Inc. in 2004.

Since the beginning, the company has focused on competency development and recognition for key sectors – construction, transportation and logistics, oil and gas, mining, agriculture, manufacturing – the industries that form the backbone of the Canadian economy. We are now offering services to municipalities, particularly in the area of public works and infrastructure – the places where skilled trades workers are found.

The strength of the company lies in the background of the founders. We are the consultants with dirt under our nails and mud on our boots. We’ve been in the field, we understand the challenges faced by front-line workers, we speak their language, and above all else we recognize that it’s these front-line workers that are the key to an organization’s success. We’re able to work throughout the organization, from the shop floor to the boardroom.

Western and Northern Canada, and Ontario

Success Story:

Northern British Columbia is expecting a boom over the next few years as a result of a number of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) export projects. However, building, operating and maintaining the LNG plants, terminals and associated pipelines has the potential to create acute skills shortages and subsequently higher labour costs and longer project timelines. To address the potential shortages, the Petroleum Human Resource Council of Canada was interested in looking at transferable skills for high demand occupations in the sector.

Griffiths Sheppard’s approach involved detailed research into high demand occupations as well as the investigation of occupations in sectors with high unemployment using published occupational standard StatsCan data and other information sources to identify opportunities for cross training, retraining and upgrading in order to make maximum use of available labour. The result of the project is a comprehensive ‘skills and qualifications transferability matrix’ that identifies similar/compatible skill sets and provides employers, training providers and regulators with information to tailor programs designed to ease potential labour shortages in the sector. The information contained in the matrix was incorporated into a complete workforce strategy for the region.
