Hiring in the time of COVID-19. Part 1

Administration, Human Resources

Thursday, October, 15th, 2020

I found myself in a very strange situation for the first time in 25-years of doing this thing we call, “search”.  Suddenly I had candidates, and I had a search committee, but the two were separated by both distance and …

Success Story:

As 2020 came into view, the town council tasked me with finding a new CAO for Birch Hills County AB. The process was smooth, and the candidate pool was good, although the overwhelming changes to the hiring landscape started to show themselves in early March 2020, with the approach of Covid-19. The process would normally have seen us all meeting up and doing face to face interviews with the shortlist. However, that all changed to a virtual interview process with the shut down of so much of Canada. The team in Birch Hills was committed to community and candidate safety. We took the process to a virtual platform for all interviews and subsequently walked through those challenges together. The result allowed us to interview several qualified candidates and selecting the one that the council felt was the best match for the community's current and future needs. Months later now, both sides of the process, the committee and the new CAO, are finding their footing and building the best strategy for reaching the goals of Birch Hills County together. They went as far as to offer this note of praise, " Phil is a powerful asset to use when searching for senior leadership."

"Aside from experience and education and expertise, Phil brings that extra piece that cannot be taught. He has that "sixth sense" that lets him know when an organization, position, and person are the right match."

- Eric Frans - VP Development

" Phil was top notch. Even when our search for a CAO faced the onset of Covid-19, Phil adapted the process to enable us to be successful. He provided us with quality candidates and his insight into them was invaluable. He is a powerful asset in searching for senior leadership."

- Gerald Manzulenko - Reeve Birch Hills County

"Every time I called on Phil to assist with a recruit it was because it was an extremely difficult role to fill. He was always prepared to take up the challenge and find that ideal candidate, even when we could not clearly define what that person looked like, or when the mandate would change"

- Shannon DeLenardo - HR Director
